Fixed

  • Answer sheets and answer keys open properly in Google DocsIf you open a Compose download in Google Docs instead of Word, the answer sheet's bubbles, the answer key's grading grid, the packet's cover tables and the lesson and sub plan schedules now print at full width instead of one letter wide.

Improved

  • Pro now costs $4.99 a month or $50 a yearCompose Pro is now $4.99 a month or $50 a year, and the free plan stays exactly as it is.

Fixed

  • Arabic text left out of a paste reads in orderWhen part of what you paste can't be read as a question, Compose shows it back to you in your own words, and Arabic text there now keeps its own order inside the quotes instead of having its punctuation jumbled.

  • Answer choices can be picturesFor a question like "Which graph shows y = 2x?" you can now give each answer choice one of your uploaded pictures when you edit the question, and every version prints each picture beside the letter it was shuffled to, with the answer key naming the right letter and the bubble sheets unchanged.

Improved

  • MathType equations in your Word files now come throughEquations you wrote with MathType (fractions, powers, roots, absolute value, subscripts like H₂O) now import as readable math on every version and the answer key, so you don't have to retype them; the few Compose can't read with confidence, like a summation or a matrix, are still set aside with "Check this question's math".

Fixed

  • Math in your Word files now comes throughEquations you typed in Word, and exponents like x² or subscripts like H₂O, now import as readable math instead of disappearing; anything Compose can't read, like a MathType equation, is set aside with "Check this question's math" so nothing goes missing without you knowing.
  • Questions you keep are in your testA question you choose to keep when Compose asks you to check it is now in your test and your question bank, where before it could be left out of the versions.
  • Blank pasted choices and the delete confirm, fixedA pasted choice that is just its letter, like “b)” with nothing after it, now hands its question back to you to fix instead of putting every later choice under the wrong letter, and deleting from your Tests page no longer flashes “Deleting…” before you have said yes.
  • Pasted math questions are no longer left outA pasted question with no answer choices that starts with "Find", "Simplify", "Factor", "Graph" or a similar math word now comes in as a written-answer question, instead of landing in the list of lines Compose couldn't read.
  • Questions with blank choices wait for youA question whose choices are blank or read the same, such as a line of a printed answer key, now waits for you to keep or leave out instead of printing on your test.
  • Tables in your questions print as tablesA table that is part of a question, like an x and y table or a chart of values, now comes through from your Word file or a paste and prints as a real table on every version, instead of a jumbled line of numbers.
  • "Use the table for questions 9-10" now fits each versionWhen a table, passage or graph names its own questions by number, each version now prints the numbers those questions have on that version, so Version B says "questions 13-14" if that is where they landed; any number Compose can't be sure of prints exactly as you wrote it.
  • Cleaner Word files for every versionYour downloaded versions no longer end with a blank page, Arabic tests now print their page footers, answer key headings and number answers the right way round, and the photos you add no longer carry hidden details like where they were taken.
  • Google Drive uploads follow the boxes you tickTicking "Keep answer choices in the same order" or "Also reword" before choosing a file from Google Drive now works the same as it does for an uploaded file.
  • Unread pasted questions shown; Arabic choices print rightWhen you paste questions into Add questions, any part Compose couldn’t read (a choice left blank, say) is now shown back to you to paste again instead of quietly missing from your bank, and on an Arabic test the print view writes each choice letter right to left, matching your Word download.
  • Long file names keep their beginningA test made from a file with a very long name keeps the start of its title, where before its first letters could be missing.
  • A bubble answer sheet is read as your key, not questionsIf your PDF ends with a bubble answer sheet (numbered rows of A B C D with one filled in), Compose now sets that page aside as your answer key instead of turning each row into a blank question; its filled bubbles answer the questions that have no answer only when they match every answer your question pages already mark; an answer your pages mark is never changed.

New

  • The answer key maps each question across versionsThe master answer key now has a question map showing each question's number on every version (question 1 on Version A is question 15 on Version B), so you can match the versions in a grader like ZipGrade and see the most-missed questions for the whole test.
  • Keep answer choices in the same order on every versionA new box on the upload card, off unless you tick it, shuffles only the question order, so each question keeps its answer letter on every version, which helps if you grade with a tool like ZipGrade.

Improved

  • Shorter words on the question and answer key screensAdding questions, adding an answer key and editing a question now say what each choice does in a line instead of a paragraph.
  • Word files bring their pictures with themWhen a question in your Word file uses a graph or picture, Compose now attaches that picture to the question for you, instead of holding it as missing a figure.
  • Shorter words on the full workspace test screensMaking versions, make-ups, practice sheets, downloads and results in the full workspace now explain each choice in a line instead of a paragraph.
  • Ask for a feature from a simple form“Ask for a feature” now opens a short form on the site instead of your email app, so a request takes a few seconds to send.
  • Shorter words across the rest of the full workspaceThe workspace home, billing, accommodations, units, plans, grading, proofreading and the first-question tour now say what you need in a line or two.
  • A shorter note before you open Google DrivePicking a test from Google Drive now says in two lines what Google will ask you and what Compose can see.
  • The Features page shows Compose as it is todayThe Features page now covers Tests and Questions, what's in the Full workspace, what's Pro, and what teachers say about Compose.
  • The Library's upload button reads "Add class material"The button for uploading a packet or handout to your Library now reads "Add class material", the same as the page it opens.
  • A clearer Compose iconThe Compose icon in your browser tab, bookmarks and Google results is now a round badge that is easier to pick out.

Fixed

  • An answer key at the back of your file is read as a keyWhen your file ends with its answer key, even one with section headings and a short note after each answer, Compose now fills in your answers from it instead of adding the key's lines as extra questions.
  • No more light flash in the dark themesWith Midnight or Neutral Dark, opening a tab no longer shows a light panel for a moment before the page appears.
  • Your theme now applies on every pageThe theme you pick in Settings now changes Tests, Questions and More as well, not only the Full workspace.
  • Adding a file you already made into a testOn the Questions tab, adding a file you once made into a test now tells you its questions are already in your questions, instead of opening the test or bringing back one you deleted.
  • Re-uploading a deleted test's file makes a new testIf you deleted a test and later upload the same file again, Compose now builds a new test from it instead of showing “This test was deleted.”
  • Small pictures in a PDF come in with their questionA small picture in your PDF, about an inch or two across, is no longer skipped when the file is read, so its question isn't held as missing a figure.
  • “Added” counts only the questions that were addedAfter you add questions, the count now matches what See them shows, and questions you already had are listed as already in your questions instead of counted as new.
  • Graphs and tables drawn in a PDF come in tooA graph, diagram or table your PDF draws instead of placing as a picture (common when a test was saved from a web page) now comes in with its question, each question on a page gets its own figure, and smaller pictures come in too while a logo on every page is still left out.
  • Your answer key isn't listed as questions you left outWhen your file ends with its answer key, the upload's page in the Full workspace no longer lists the key's lines as questions you left out.
  • Downloads keep the letters of your titleA download named after an Arabic or Japanese title now keeps every letter as you wrote it; only accents on Latin, Greek and Cyrillic letters are simplified.
  • Adding questions no longer says it's making versionsWhile a file is read from Add questions on the Questions tab, the screen now says it is adding them to your questions instead of preparing test versions.

New

  • Make questions that share a list one matching setIf questions already in your bank each repeat the same list of answers (or a word bank landed on only some of them), My Questions and Uploads now offer to make them one matching set, keeping the answers you have, and tests you already made stay exactly as they printed.
  • Your questions, by unit, in the simple viewQuestions now shows each unit with its count; open a question to fix its words, tap its answer, add a figure or delete it, and add your answer key from the same place.
  • Add questions without making a testOn Questions, Add questions takes a pasted list, a file or photos and puts them straight into your questions, ready for any test, asking you only about the ones it isn't sure of.
  • Paste, spreadsheets and answer keys handle matchingA pasted Matching or Word Bank section now comes in as one matching set, a spreadsheet can group rows into a set with a Group column, and an answer key can give each answer as its letter or as the word itself.
  • What teachers say, and a line in the TermsThe homepage now shows a few teachers' own words, never with names, and the Terms say we may quote feedback you send us without your name and will remove it if you ask.

Improved

  • Two tabs: Tests and QuestionsCompose now has two tabs, Tests and Questions, and both show from your first visit, so you can add your questions before you make a test.
  • Upload a diagram from a question and come straight backWhen you edit a question and choose to upload a new source, you now return to that question with the diagram already attached, instead of landing on your list of sources.
  • Grading and sub plans moved to the Full workspaceGrading and sub plans now live in the Full workspace, under More, and your old links to them still open the same page there.
  • Matching sets tell students where the letter goesWhen a test has a matching set and you haven't written your own directions, the line at the top now adds "For matching questions, write the letter of your answer on the blank." on the printed and Word copies.
  • Proofread fixes typos in one press, rewrites one by oneThe one-press button on your proofread results now fixes only typos and grammar, and a suggestion that rewrites a question for clarity shows your current wording beside it so you can apply it yourself.
  • A shorter More menuMore now holds just Settings, Billing, Help and a link to the Full workspace, where grading, sub plans, lessons and the rest live.
  • Change an answer says where it saves, and can be undoneChanging an answer on a finished test now says it updates that test's answer key and the same question in your bank, and each change has an Undo.
  • Generate versions says how many questions can be rewordedWhen you pick a variation level, the test page now tells you how many of the test's questions are set to allow rewording, so you know what can change before you build.
  • Say no to a reworded question with Use my originalOn the review page, a reworded question you don't want now goes back to your own question with Use my original, instead of a Reject button that held up finalizing.
  • After printing, your answer keys come nextOnce your test is ready, the next step on its page is the answer keys for every version, and the rarer choices, like grading with Compose, sit under More options.
  • Deleting from Unit setup says what uses the questionDeleting a question while setting up a unit now tells you which draft tests and practice sheets use it before you say yes, the same way the Questions list does.
  • One button to approve a question on the review pageThe review page no longer shows a Lock button that did the same thing as Approve, and a question set to print exactly as written now says so.
  • Question settings say exactly what they doThe wording settings now say that "Don't change" also keeps the answer choices in the same order, that questions are reworded only when you ask for reworded versions, and that Light, Medium and Heavy count only the questions set to allow rewording.
  • The Advanced workspace is now the Full workspaceThe part of Compose with every tool is now called the Full workspace, and its pages no longer sit right up against the bar at the top.
  • The import review board says why it set a question asideWhen Compose sets an imported line aside because it may not be a question, the review board now tells you why, such as "It looks like a heading or a section title."
  • Sub plan and question notes say who reads themThe sub plan notes box now asks you to leave out students' names, and a question's teacher notes now say they are never printed but are read when Compose rewords that question.

Fixed

  • A matching section pasted on New Test is one setWhen you paste questions to make a new test, a matching section (a lettered list with a blank beside each item) now becomes one matching set with its list printed once, the same as pasting into My Questions, instead of a separate multiple choice question for every item.
  • Uploads keep a matching section or word bank togetherWhen a PDF, Word file or photo has a matching section or a word bank, its questions now come in as one matching set that shares the list, instead of each question repeating the whole list or some getting none.
  • Your notes for rewording are now followedThe notes you write for rewording on a test are now sent with every question Compose rewords for it, including when you reword a single question again.
  • Clearing or replacing results asks firstClear results and Replace results now tell you how many saved results and scanned sheets they delete, and nothing is deleted until you say yes.
  • Organizing never changes your wording, and now says soThe note on My Questions now says plainly that organizing only fills in each question's topic and thinking level, and that your versions use your exact questions unless you choose to have them reworded.
  • Pasted written questions come in without an answerA written question you paste with no choices and no answer, like "In two sentences, explain why the moon shows phases", is now added as a written question you can key later instead of being set aside as unreadable, while name and date lines are still left out.
  • Regenerate versions asks before replacing themPressing Regenerate versions now tells you that it replaces every version and your review edits, and on a finalized test that printed copies won't match, before anything changes.
  • Answer keys reach questions you typed or brought in by CSVOn Add an answer key you can now pick the questions that did not come from an upload, so a key for questions you typed or brought in from a spreadsheet finds them even when you have one upload too.
  • Fix wording when an answer is written into a matching itemWhen Compose finds one of a matching set's answers written into an item, you can now change the wording right on the card, and keeping it as is says the answer will show on student copies.
  • Linking questions to a passage no longer errorsAfter an upload, setting which questions a figure's passage belongs to now saves even when the figure's picture couldn't be kept, and if something can't be saved you're told why instead of seeing an error page.
  • Matching directions print as a normal sentenceA matching set's directions now show in ordinary sentence case on the print page and the test page, the way the Word copy prints them, and in Word the last blank of a set leaves the same space before the next question as every other question does.
  • Matching questions can be answered on your test pageWhen a matching question on a new test has no answer yet, your test page now shows a card where you tap its letter, A to J, beside the words from its list, so you can finish the answer key there instead of being told it needs answers with nowhere to give them.
  • Organizing says what it really doesWhile your new questions are sorted after an upload, Compose now says it is filling in their topic and thinking level and that your wording stays yours, the button is called "Organize my questions" everywhere, and the note says it uses a little of your plan's allowance instead of calling it free.
  • Bulk changes wait for ApplySetting importance or wording for selected questions, and merging a topic into another, now waits for you to press Apply or Merge, so scrolling through a list can't change your questions by accident.
  • Headings with unreadable choices stay out of your bankWhen an upload turns a heading into a question whose answer choices couldn't be read, Compose now sets it aside for you to check instead of adding it to your bank with choices that read "<UNKNOWN>".
  • The make-up test says which questions can repeatThe make-up test panel now says it uses different questions only where your bank has a match, and that other questions are reworded or repeat word for word.
  • The review page's group approve says what it approvesOn the review page, a question's approve button now says how many versions it approves, and versions with a warning stay for you to read one at a time.
  • The reword box says when it uses your free reworded testOn the free plan, the "Also reword questions" box on a new test now tells you it uses your one free reworded test, or that it's already used and your versions will be shuffled instead.
  • The website names the right answer lettersThe features, FAQ and trust pages now say answer sheets and grading run from A to J, the way they have since a question can have up to ten choices, instead of stopping at E.
  • Your figure notes stay out of student filesA description you write for a figure is no longer hidden inside the student Word file; students' copies carry only the figure's title.
  • A missing space on the results pageThe reteach note on a test's results now reads "then build a retest" instead of running the last two words together.
  • Figures you can delete, and a Move buttonWebP and SVG figures now print as pictures on student copies, and one that still can't shows only its title; you can also delete a figure, questions move to a unit only when you press Move, and a heading pasted after a matching list stays a heading.
  • The retest button reads right for a single questionWhen only one question on a test needs reteaching, the results page button now says "Build retest on this item" instead of "these 1 item".
  • Your figure notes never print for studentsA note you wrote about a figure no longer prints on student copies, even when the figure isn't attached; a question that needs a missing picture shows a placeholder instead.
  • Deleting one question reads rightWhen you delete a single question that nothing else uses, the confirmation now says "Nothing else uses it." instead of "them".

New

  • Matching sets: one list of answers for several questionsIn My Questions, tick questions that share one list of answers (quotes to match to speakers, or a word bank) and choose Make a matching set, and the list prints once above them with the questions kept together on every version.
  • Share or copy the link to your computerOn your phone, a Share link and a Copy link button send the Compose address to yourself in Messages, Notes or your own email, so you can open it on your computer.

Improved

  • Change questions starts with the test's own unitsWhen you change a test's questions, the list now opens on the units that test already uses instead of your whole bank, so it is short enough to scroll on a phone, and All units still shows everything.
  • Matching sets now change from version to versionOn every version, the questions in a matching set come in a different order and the list of answers is lettered differently, with the answer key following that version's own letters, and a test built from a plan always takes a matching set whole, never just a few of its questions.
  • The address to type on your computerOn your phone, Compose now tells you where to go on your computer (composeforteachers.com) and which button you signed up with, so you can pick up there without waiting for an email.
  • Matching sets grade by each version's own lettersScan & grade marks a matching set against each version's own letters, the answer sheet prints a bubble for every answer in the list (up to J), your results count a wrong answer by its words on every version, and practice worksheets now letter the list differently each time.
  • Uploads and Proofread count only what they really useWhen an upload or a Proofread finishes, Compose now counts what it actually used against your plan's allowance, not an estimate, so most uploads count for less than before.
  • Emails say where to go on your computerThe welcome email, the next-morning reminder and the "email me the link" email now tell you to go to composeforteachers.com on your computer and which button you signed up with, so you can get back in even without the link.
  • Create test stays in reach on your phoneWhen you build a test or change its questions on a phone, the button to finish now stays at the bottom of the screen with how many you have picked, so you no longer scroll past a long list to find it.

Fixed

  • Uploading your tests no longer uses your Pro allowanceOn Pro, reading the tests you upload no longer counts against your monthly allowance, so rewording and proofreading can never stop you from adding your own questions.
  • You can move to the next page of your questionsWhen your questions fill more than one page, a Next page button now sits above and below the list, where the Feedback button can no longer cover it.
  • A photo upload that couldn't be read says so onceWhen Compose couldn't read the photos you uploaded, the import page now explains it in one message instead of two that said nearly the same thing.
  • Oldest first now shows your oldest questions firstChoosing Oldest first in your question list sorted newest first instead; it now puts the questions you added first at the top.
  • The Feedback button no longer covers the bottom of a pageEvery page now leaves room at the bottom, so the last button or link is never hidden behind Feedback, and an old link to a page of questions that no longer exists opens the last page instead of an error.
  • An old sign-in link now says why it stopped workingIf you open an older sign-in email after a newer one was sent, Compose now says a newer link replaced it and shows both ways back in, instead of saying it expired.
  • An upload's unit links show only that upload's questionsOn the Uploads page, the unit under each upload (like Unsorted · 87) now opens just those questions from that file, not every question in the unit.
  • Deleted questions no longer stay ticked in other viewsQuestions you delete or move out of a unit no longer show as still selected when you go back to that unit, so its selection count stays true.
  • A very large delete tells you what to doDeleting more than 2,000 questions at once now says to narrow the list to a unit or an upload, instead of asking you to select a question first.
  • The test name you type keeps its hyphensA name you type for a pasted test, like "Unit 3-B Quiz", now prints exactly as you typed it on the packet, the print view and the Word file, instead of losing its hyphens.
  • Deleting a whole last page still tells you it workedWhen you delete every question on the last page of your list, you now land on the page before it and still see how many questions were deleted.
  • Sign-in emails say a newer email replaces the linkThe emails with a sign-in link no longer promise it lasts a set time; they say it works once and that a newer sign-in email replaces it, and how to get back in after that.
  • A code on every question in your file stays out of your bankWhen your file prints the same code at the end of every question, that code is no longer copied into each question or used as its section, so uploading the file again does not add copies of questions you already have.
  • A test that can't start no longer uses your allowanceIf making versions with rewording stops because your free tests are used up, the rewording it never did no longer counts against your allowance.
  • Searching for * finds a star, not every questionA search in your question bank that includes a * now finds questions with a star in them, instead of listing every question you have.
  • Select all matching writes the number like the countIn a large bank, the Select all matching link now writes 2,050 with a comma, the same way the count beside it does.
  • A unit typed as Unassigned leaves questions unassignedTyping Unassigned as a unit name now keeps those questions under Unassigned, where you can always find them, instead of in a unit the list could never open.
  • A done message goes away when you move onAfter you delete or move questions, the message saying so now clears when you turn a page or pick another unit, instead of following you there.
  • Building a test on your phone scrolls as one pageOn a phone, the list of questions to pick from and the order of your test are now part of the page, so swiping moves the whole page instead of getting stuck inside a box.
  • Changing a test's questions scrolls as one page on phonesOn a phone, the list you see after tapping Change questions is now part of the page, so swiping moves the whole page down to the save button instead of getting stuck inside a box.
  • Photos that couldn't be read now say soIf something goes wrong while Compose reads your photos, the upload now tells you plainly and asks you to upload them again, instead of finishing with no questions and no reason.
42 changes

New

  • Delete a test and its upload togetherWhen you delete a test, a tick box lets you remove the upload it came from and its questions from your bank as well, and it stays off unless you tick it.
  • Name your test when you pasteA title box above the paste is filled in with today’s name, and you can type over it to give the test your own.
  • Photograph every page, then send them togetherOn your phone, Take photos now keeps each page you shoot with a small preview, so you can drop a blurry one or move a page up before you send them all as one test.
  • Compose asks before reading a test you already haveUpload a test you brought in before in another file, such as the copy with the answers marked, and Compose asks whether to read it again to pick up the answers or stop there.
  • Choose to have questions reworded on a new testWhen you make a test, tick Also reword questions and Compose rewrites some of them with the same answer for that test only, then waits for you to check each one before the versions print.

Improved

  • Versions keep your units in orderWhen a test shows unit names, each version now keeps the units in your order and mixes up the questions inside each unit, so every student copy prints each unit's name once.
  • Question search reads answer choices and unitsSearching your questions now also finds words in the answer choices, the topic and the unit name, not just the question itself.
  • Unit headings you paste become unitsWhen you paste questions under lines like “Unit 1: Oceans”, they now go in that unit, and your test prints each unit’s name once and mixes questions only within each unit.
  • Unit names print once, as a headingWhen you print unit names on student copies, each one now appears once as a heading above its questions instead of a small grey label before every question.
  • Open Compose from the website when signed inWhen you're already signed in, the top of the Compose website shows one Open Compose button that takes you straight to your tests, instead of Log in and Start free.
  • Change an answer after the key is doneAnswers stay tappable after your answer key is complete, so a wrong one can be fixed right on the test’s page, and each tap saves faster.
  • Library search finds titles and headingsWhen you look for class material while planning a sub day, a search now finds a document by its title or by a heading inside it, like Trade Networks.
  • Your test's page says which photos to retakeIf a photo gave back no questions, or answers to questions you already had weren’t used, your test’s page now says so and why.
  • Plainer words on Pricing and BillingPricing and your Billing page now say what each plan does in plain words, like reworded versions and a proofread sweep for your question library.
  • A hint when your browser holds a downloadIf a file still hasn’t downloaded after half a minute, Compose tells you your browser may be blocking it and how to allow it.
  • Unit headings stand out on the printed copyOn the print view, each unit name now prints bold and a little larger with space above it, as it does in the Word download.
  • Rewording counts what it really costsEach reworded question now uses a little more of your monthly allowance, so the count you see matches what rewording actually costs.

Fixed

  • Word and photo uploads reach your bank without a revisitIf you leave while Compose is reading a Word file or photos, its questions are now added the next time you open My Questions or Uploads.
  • Your allowance counts what rewording really costAfter a reword, translation or make-up finishes, your allowance is charged what it actually used, which is usually well under the amount held back while it ran.
  • Headings under a question stay out of its answersWhen you paste a test, a heading typed right under a question's last choice, like “Cell Biology”, no longer gets stuck onto that choice.
  • Sheet photos your phone saved sideways read the right wayA photo of a student's answer sheet that your phone saved sideways is now turned upright before it is straightened and read.
  • Big photos of your answer key now readA large or tilted phone photo of your answer key is now read like any other, instead of being turned away for its size.
  • Rewording a few questions uses only a little of your planWhen Compose rewords questions for your versions, your plan now counts only the questions it rewords, so a short test no longer uses up as much as a full-size one.
  • An upload that added nothing still opensOpening an upload whose questions were all already in your bank now says so, instead of saying the page isn't there.
  • Printing from the browser shows unit names onceWhen you print a test straight from Compose with unit names on, each unit's name now prints once above its questions, the same as the Word download.
  • Downloads that aren't ready yet look itWhile reworded questions wait for your review, the student versions and answer sheets buttons are greyed out instead of looking ready to click.
  • Reworded questions are counted once eachAfter Compose rewords questions on a new test, it now says how many of your questions it reworded, not how many copies sit across your versions.
  • A deleted test says so in the full workspace tooOpening an old link to a test you deleted now says “This test was deleted” in the Advanced workspace as well, instead of a page that isn’t there.
  • A wrapped answer stays whole in a short pasteIn a short paste, an answer choice that runs onto a second line, like a long name, now stays one choice instead of being cut in half.
  • Compose spots a re-upload with codes at the endCompose now recognises a test you already uploaded even when each question ends with an item code in brackets, and asks before reading it again.
  • No empty test offer after an upload that added nothingWhen every question in an upload was already in your bank, the finished screen now sends you to your bank instead of offering a test made from that upload.
  • Re-upload check looks past item codesIf your questions start with an item code like “AP-12”, Compose now still notices when you upload the same test again and asks before reading it.
  • The finished-upload card says what you uploadedWhen an upload has no answers marked, the card now names the photo, PDF or Word file you sent, and an upload that added nothing new no longer talks about questions it didn't add.
  • The Google Drive note matches Google's pageBefore you pick a test from Google Drive, the note now says what Google shows you: Compose wants to access your Google Account, then Allow access.
  • Translating a short test uses less of your allowanceTranslating a test into a home language now counts only the questions it translates, so a short test no longer uses up as much as a long one.
  • Re-upload count includes questions you typed inWhen Compose asks about a test you already uploaded, “already in your bank” now counts the questions you typed in yourself too.
  • The "already uploaded" question counts every matchWhen Compose asks whether to read a test you already uploaded, the number it says are already in your bank now counts every one of them.
  • Every question gets its own number in resultsWhen your versions have different questions, each question in your results now has a number of its own, so two are never both called Question 1.
  • Several unreadable photos are called "those photos"When Compose can't read any of the photos you sent, the message now speaks about all of them instead of "that photo".
  • Clearer reasons when a re-upload's answer isn't usedWhen a re-uploaded file's answer can't be used because two of your question's choices read the same, Compose now says that instead of calling the file unclear.
  • A make-up uses only the rewording it doesBuilding a make-up now counts only the questions it rewords against your monthly allowance, instead of the cost of the biggest test there is.
  • The generate page reads your allowance against this testOn the free plan, the generate page no longer says your rewording allowance is used up when what's left still covers this test.

  • A What’s new pageEvery change to Compose is listed here in plain words, newest first.

Improved

  • Pasted tests keep every question, in orderA pasted test keeps your document’s order and counts every way of numbering questions (4., 4), (4), Q4 or “Question 4 of 10”), and pasting a test already in your bank still builds the packet.
  • Big uploads keep going in the backgroundWord files and photos now upload the same steady way as PDFs, so a large upload finishes instead of timing out.
  • Better reading of photographed pagesPhotos are no longer turned upside down on a guess, answers written beside the questions are read, and a photo Compose can’t read tells you what to try next.
  • An upload with no test questions says soIf a file has no test questions in it, Compose tells you on one screen and offers to paste the test or try another file.
  • Translated tests match every versionTranslated tests print in Version A’s order, “see Question 4” references are renumbered for each version, and Arabic prints right to left.
  • A clearer answer keyThe answer key’s legend explains only the marks that appear on it, and every answer-key page has a footer.
  • Says why a re-upload left an answer blankWhen you upload a file again, the upload’s page now says which answers it filled in and why any others were left blank.
  • Practice sheets mention the answersPractice sheets now tell students that their teacher has the answers.
  • Answer keys point to the upload they fitIf you check an answer key against the wrong upload, Compose tells you which upload it fits, or says plainly when more than one fits equally well.
  • Arabic tests print fully in ArabicAn Arabic test’s student copy prints Compose’s own instructions and labels in Arabic, and its print preview reads right to left.
  • Plainer login messagesWhen signing in doesn’t work, Compose tells you what went wrong in plain words.
  • Shared personal links show the offerWhen you share your personal link, its preview tells colleagues about the free month of Pro.
  • What's new is easier to scan and easier to findEach change is now one headline and one sentence with the newest day open, and What's new sits in the top menu, the new phone menu and on More.

  • Tests in other alphabets keep every questionTests written in Arabic, Russian, Chinese or any other non-Latin alphabet no longer lose all but one question as “repeats.”
  • Large bubble-sheet photos get gradedA large phone photo of a bubble sheet is resized before Compose reads it, so it gets graded instead of failing.
  • Proposed answers finish their round on big banksWorking out answers for a large bank now always finishes its round and asks you to run it again for the rest, instead of losing that round.
  • Download links always save the fileClicking a download link now always saves the file.
  • Sorting into units leaves the rest aloneSorting questions into units after an import sorts only that import’s questions and leaves the rest of your bank where you put it.
  • Your Tests list shows every testDeleting tests no longer hides your other tests from the Tests list, and a test you renamed shows its new name.
  • Plan downloads no longer cancel each otherClicking a practice sheet, lesson plan or sub plan download twice no longer cancels the first download, and the file keeps your own title in its name.
  • Clear messages when a bubble sheet can’t be readWhen a scanned sheet can’t be read, Compose says why in plain words, and it no longer suggests sheets were graded when none were.
  • Item analysis numbers every questionThe item-analysis table gives every question its own number instead of repeating one and skipping another.
  • Headings in a pasted test stay out of the choicesA heading typed right under a question’s last choice is no longer glued onto that choice, and Compose lists that heading with the other lines it left out.
  • Very large banks list every question onceIn a bank of more than 1,000 questions, no question is skipped or shown twice.
  • Finished uploads stay finishedAn upload that had already finished no longer fails when you open it again.
  • No charge when there is nothing to rewordAsking for reworded versions when none of your questions are set to be reworded no longer counts against your plan.
